OUR THEME FOR 2019
(Part 15)

FAMILIES ON MISSION – 2

January 10, 2019
Today’s reading: 1 John 4:19-5:4

The most basic trait or virtue of a Christian is love. The greatest commandments are love of God and love of neighbor. God is love and God loves us. In turn, “we love because he first loved us.” (v.4:19).

Who are we to love? Everyone, including our enemy. But we start with those closest to us, our fellow Christians. “This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.” (v.4:21). We are the family of God. We are the people of God. This starts with the nuclear family, which are the parents and their children. Then we have the family of families, the community of which we are a part, which for us is CFC-FFL. Then there is the larger Church, and the parishes of which we are part.

Such familiesnuclear, community, parish, universalare bound together by faith in Jesus. “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves also the one begotten by him.” (v.5:1). Thus in Christ we become children of the Father, and in the Father we love those others who are also His children.

Thus we love our brethren to manifest our love for God, but we also manifest our love for God by obeying His commandments. “For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments.” (v.5:3a). God commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves and we do so. But God also sends us forth to proclaim the gospel. Every child of God is to be an evangelizer, to help bring the world under submission to Christ. Thus, “whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.” (v.5:4).

So we are called to be the family of God, and we are called to be the army of God. We are families on mission. Love unites and binds together the family, and love impels us to proclaim the love of God to many others, all of them children of God, to the ends of the earth.

What ultimately assures us that we are living out the commandment to love? It is when we become families on mission. “In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments.” (v.5:2).
