THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
EVANGELIZATION AND WAR – 2
October 12, 2018
Today’s gospel: Luke 11:15-26
In today’s gospel, Jesus talks about the enemy, the
evil one. People saw him driving out demons and concluded
that he did so by the power of Beelzebul (v.15). But why would
the devil drive out the devil? Then Jesus talks about how
strong the devil is, but that one stronger than he (that is,
Jesus) will dispossess him (v.22). The outcome of war is determined
by who is the stronger force. Finally, Jesus talks about the
return of the unclean spirit (v.24). The devil does not give
up and perseveres in afflicting people, in even intensifying
work of Jesus, which is salvation, has engaged him in spiritual
war with the evil one. In the same way, the work of evangelization,
by which we proclaim the salvation of Jesus, engages us in
spiritual war. Now know this: this is all-out war, with eternal
went to great lengths to win for us our salvation, sending
His very own Son Jesus to suffer and die for us. Since the
whole world is under the dominion of the evil one, only Jesus
the stronger man can save us. As such, we either choose to
be with him, or we choose to remain under the enemy’s
dominion. Thus Jesus says, “whoever is not with me is
against me” (v.23a). It can only be one or the other.
If we do not accept the salvation Jesus has won for us, then
we in effect choose to remain under the enemy’s dominion.
we are called on not only to accept Christ as Savior, but
to proclaim his salvation to all. We are to share Christ.
We are to evangelize. As such, we are to participate in the
war. Now Jesus says something interesting: “whoever
does not gather with me scatters.” (v.23b). If we do
not help gather the lost sheep, then we in effect are helping
to keep them scattered.
Catholics today are unaware of what is going on, the spiritual
war that rages in the heavens and on earth. They go about
their own lives, not knowing that war is being fought for
their very souls, and that they themselves need to decide
on whose side they are.
Are you for or against Jesus? Do you gather or scatter? The
choice should be clear.
