THE SERVANT GENERAL
ON SERVANT LEADERSHIP
TENDING THE FLOCK – 6
May 16, 2018
Today’s reading: Acts 20:28-38
God raises servant leaders to oversee and care for His people.
Among other things, they are to guard them. “Keep watch
over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy
Spirit has appointed you overseers” (v.28a). What are
they to guard against? Those would be predators from outside
and from within. Paul says that “savage wolves will
come among you, and they will not spare the flock.”
(v.29). Those would be the demons and their human agents.
But there is also the enemy within. “And from your own
group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw
the disciples away after them.” (v.30).
is the purpose of such men? It is to draw members of the body
away from the body and to their own group. What would be their
reasons? They might have grave differences with the leadership,
or are just after personal power and position, or have been
deeply hurt somehow in the present body and so would like
to strike back. To be able to draw members of the body away,
they often resort to lies, half-truths, maligning and calumny.
They do great injustice, as well as harm to the body and its
mission. They will be held accountable by God.
Servant leaders should seek to protect God’s people,
the members of the body, from such predators. They are to
keep watch over them. “So be vigilant” (v.31a).
This is especially because God gathered such people through
the sacrifice of His own Son who shed his blood for them.
Thus servant leaders are to “tend the church of God
that he acquired with his own blood.” (v.28b). Now they
are in the body of Christ, but predators seek to snatch them
long as servant leaders strive to care for the flock, they
can rely on the grace of God to preserve His people. So for
servant leaders, do your part and entrust the rest to God.
“And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word
of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance
among all who are consecrated.” (v.32).
